Upcoming Events - Minobusan Kaibyaku-e

By Kendra Evans

Have you heard of the Nichiren Sect of Buddhism? One of the most famous sects, its founder Nichiren started his education into the Buddhist teachings in the Kyoto-Nara area, but was exiled due to his criticisms of other sects. Once he returned, he moved to Mt Minobu, in Yamanashi Prefecture, and founded Kuon-ji or Kuon Temple, where he spent the rest of his life teaching his own interpretations of The Lotus Sutra.

Every year at Kuonji, there is a celebration of Nichiren and what his teachings brought to Japanese Buddhism, which takes place over several days. This year, the festival will be held from the 15th to the 18th of June.

If you are interested in Japanese Buddhism, its history and its cultural practices, this is a brilliant opportunity to see it in real life. The monks of the temple dress in traditional robes, and there are a variety of different such as readings of scripture, parades and the Nichiren Buddhist memorial service. A unique opportunity in one of the most beautiful spots in Japan.
